IFC Open Engine: BIM

Following up from last post with the open question, Open Engine and IFC.  I found this but need to dig to see what is in development, who’s using it, succesful implmentations.  I know this blog is one in kajillion but would love to hear what the programming community is doing around this.

an open source community is not likely to form around the IFC engine as the DLL is not open source. As well it relies on the Microsoft environment.

It is expected that the IFC Engine DLL will become open source. All examples on top of the DLL are already open source. Also the IFC Engine Viewer will become an open source development on top of the (open source) DLL. Next to that it is expected that the DLL itself will be able to be compiled under Linux before end of 2009, the DLL is independent of Microsoft and written in C(++), the examples on top of the DLL are (currently) Microsoft dependent.

Thanks for your comments. With all the interest around BIM and the efforts from the GSA to remain platform neutral hope I these developments will accelerate its adoption and create more services and software around the platform. (typical software adoption language but truly apt here with the marketplace looking for real solutions)
